A new pre-built VirtualBox image is available for download  from OTN (updated on March 27, 2017).

Once you download, import and configure the VM, you can pretty much do whatever you want. But Roy and Mike have put together a very good lab environment and exercise for you to practice Oracle database upgrade from 11gR2 to 12cR2. The lab includes

  • Manual upgrade of database to
  • Attach 12c non-container database as a PDB to existing CDB
  • Upgrade database using Full Transportable Export/Import to as a PDB
  • Upgrade PDB to using unplug / plug method

The pre-built VM comes with Oracle software already installed.

  • 11gR2 – /u01/app/oracle/product/
  • 12cR1 – /u01/app/oracle/product/
  • 12cR2 – /u01/app/oracle/product/

Practice upgrades, new features, patches, PSU, migration using this VirtualBox image.

Thanks to Mike Dietrich and Roy Swonger!

12c Database Image Download

Recently I tweeted the download link for the Virtual Box OVA file for 12c upgrade Hands on Lab.

Since 11g free extended support is ending in the next few months, this is the time DBAs are busily planning to upgrade their 11g databases to 12c.

The HOL OVA available in OTN is a great learning tool for all DBAs planning to upgrade to 12c database. After you download the 8 zip files to your computer, use 7-zip or similar utility to uncompress the files. Then import the resulting .OVA file to your virtualbox.

Once you start the VM and login as oracle, the screen background pretty much shows the architecture of what is available and what you will learn using the VM.

The PDF file included in the zip shows you how to perform 4 lab exercises.

In addition I would also recommend downloading and applying the latest PSU on home 🙂

With four databases and three software installations readily available, your learning opportunities are unlimited…

If you mess up something, don’t worry – just re-import the OVA file again… 🙂

Don’t forget to check out the Oracle Database 12c Learning Libary.

Good luck!

And thanks to Mike Dietrich and Roy Swonger of Oracle for making these HOL available to the community.

Happy New Year!

Upgraded Grid Infrastructure to and applied the Oct 2014 PSU. Had an error during rootupgrade.sh as well, due to the ASM spfile being on disk instead of on ASM diskgroup (MOS Note: Upgrading ASM Failed With ORA-32002: cannot create SPFILE – Doc ID 1912581.1).

The install & upgrade steps documented in PDF and uploaded to slideshare
